Lungworm

A nationwide survey of UK vets in 2009, revealed that over 25% had confirmed or suspected cases of Lungworm in a dog. But that only 6% of dog owners were aware of the condition’s existence.

So to rectify this, Bayer Animal Health makers of the flea treatment Advocate launched a nationwide campaign to promote lungworm awareness. A Bayer animal health spokesman explains: “The campaign is to raise public awareness of the parasite’s existence."

The campaign is being backed by Vets from across the UK who are also trying to make owners more aware of the condition.

Veterinarians agree that the Lungworm problem is not well known and urge all dog owners to be aware of the symptoms and treatments should infection occur.

The lungworm parasite is carried by slugs and snails.

The problem arises when dogs purposefully or accidentally eat these common garden pests when rummaging through undergrowth, eating grass, drinking from puddles or outdoor water bowls, or pick them up from their toys.

Left untreated, the infection can often be fatal
